As Sara reads from the latest dime novel, ‘Death Rides By Night’, a mysterious woman runs across the dark cliffs, seeking refuge from her pursuer, the evil Robert Rutherford. Gus Pike becomes involved in the mystery, helping Amanda Stone evade Rutherford’s grip by giving her shelter in the lighthouse.

The Journey Begins Gus discovers a bag of gems that Amanda left at the lighthouse. She claims they are the last of her family fortune and that Rutherford is trying to take them from her. Felicity, leading the other children, never quite believes Amanda’s story about the family jewels and leads the others to spy on Gus and Amanda.

Felicity tries to warn Gus but he is smitten with Amanda’s beauty and does not listen. After several altercations with Rutherford and with some help from Felicity, Felix and Sara, Gus finally comes to his senses and realizes that he’s being played for a dupe.

If she’s a woman of virtue then I’m the Queen of Sheba. – Felicity King

In the end, Felicity is proved to be correct. Amanda and Rutherford were partners in crime, stealing the gems and then double-crossing each other. Gus and the children foil the two jewel thieves and Gus learns the value of friends and that Felicity’s feelings may go deeper than friendship.

Notes & Inspirations

  • Originally Aired February 23, 1992
  • John Neville, who played Percy Methley, is no stranger to Sullivan productions or the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery. He played Professor Billby in Sullivan’s ‘By Way of the Stars’ and also went on to play Uncle Malcolm in ‘Emily of New Moon.’ He has also previously worked with Sara Polley in ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’.
  • Christopher Reeve’s love of riding is one of the reasons he took the role on “Road to Avonlea”. During filming, he would spend his time off camera riding his black stallion through the fields even though it was dark, snowing and very cold. Sadly, Mr. Reeve’s love for riding ended tragically when he became a quadriplegic after a riding accident in 1995. Christopher Reeve suffered cardiac arrest and passed away on October 10, 2004.
  • A huge lighting crane was brought in from Ohio to provide “moonlight” for the night scenes. The driver washed the truck shortly before arriving on set and all of the controls froze up over night. It took hours using large heaters to thaw everything out. In the meantime, a local crane truck was hired to mount the lighting equipment to so “the show could go on”.
