2.6: May the Best Man Win

Many years ago, Olivia King-Dale’s beau Edwin Clark was driven away by her sister Hetty, who thought him an unsuitable match. Now Edwin Clark returns, a wealthy businessman who needs little coaxing to renew his pursuit of Olivia, this time with Hetty’s blessing.

Sara, however, has other ideas, and encourages the shy photographer Jasper Dale to declare his hidden love for Olivia. With the help of her King cousins, and outraged at Edwin Clark’s abuse of a local poor boy, Sara pays a visit to Peg Bowen, the local “witch”, and asks her to make a love potion to use on Jasper and Olivia. But Peg’s “magical” charm backfires, and the children fear nothing will sway Olivia’s rapture at being courted so aggressively and generously by the wealthy Edwin Clark.

The reclusive Jasper, unable to voice his feelings, stands by mutely as Edwin showers Olivia with gifts of expensive flowers on a daily basis. But when young Teddy accidentally falls down a well, it is Jasper Dale who keeps his wits about him and rescues the lad.

Jasper’s courage and compassion and Edwin’s lack of both shows Olivia that Jasper is the better man. Jasper gains the self-confidence to declare his love once and for all and Olivia accepts his marriage proposal.
