Archie Gillis the new owner of the Avonlea Sawmill and self-appointed coach of the Avonlea hockey team, is an arrogant bully who thinks he can run rough-shod over accepted codes of Avonlea behavior. His gruff manner and arbitrary rules begin to ruffle some villagers’ feathers, especially when he starts strip cutting lumber within a mile of the village.
Miss Stacey the superintendent of schools is back and trying to impose intramural sports on the school curriculum. Hetty believes that competitive sports have no place in the school system, but Miss Stacey, an ardent supporter of the philosophy that a healthy body creates a healthy mind, suggests that hockey be considered the sport of choice.
When tryouts are announced for the Avonlea Avengers hockey team, Felix and the other boys are thrilled. Their hopes of joining the team are dashed however, when coach Archie Gillis restricts it to “men only” and enforces it with a new height restriction, barring the boys from even trying out.

Meanwhile Peg Bowen, who has words with Archie over his strip cutting too close to her house, arrives at the tryouts disguised as a man. She exposes Archie as a hypocrite when he accepts her on the team for her skills, only to denounce her when she reveals herself as a woman. Alec King, already angry at his own boy’s exclusion, stands up for Peg. When Archie challenges Alec to start his own team from these “misfits”, Alec accepts. Peg takes it one step further by challenging the Avengers to a game with the condition that if the Avengers lose, Archie has to honor the previous cutting limits around Avonlea. Archie agrees and gives Alec a week to get the Misfits team ready to play.
Under Alec’s coaching the “misfits” begin to play like a team but when he falls and badly sprains his back the team is left without a coach. Hetty steps in and forces herself to ask Miss Stacey to take over. Miss Stacey agrees only after Hetty promises to support the new sports program in the school.
You have to be a man to recognize one. – Peg Bowen
The day of the big game arrives. Upon seeing a woman coach, Archie offers to cancel the match but Hetty, Janet and Miss. Stacey refuse. Midway through the game Janet leaves to check on Alex. Sarah is injured on the game and is forced to leave, so she goes to the King farm. Sara arrives just as Janet has gone into labour. Alec who is flat on his back is of no use. Sara is the only one who can help Janet. Successfully overcoming her panic, Janet ably coaches Sara in the delivery.
The “misfits” win the game and Archie Gillis vows to honor his promise. The team arrives back at the King farm just in time to hear the cries of a newborn baby.
Notes & Inspirations
- Originally Aired February 24, 1991
- Maintaining the ice for this episode was extremely difficult due to the fluctuating temperature. The ice was natural and had to be flooded every day before shooting in order to make it “skate-able”. A water truck would be used to flood the ice but it got stuck and had to get pulled out with a tow truck. The special effects department had to keep the rink clear of snow using shovels and snowblowers.
- Weather continuity was also quite difficult as the weather went from extremely cold and snowy (ie. the tryout notice in the village) to mild and foggy (ie: the Reverend makes a bet).
- Dr. Blair mentions that it has been nine years since her last baby was born. Meaning Cecily King was born sometime in either 1895 or 1896.
